Felsental | Freeride Andermatt
The Felsental is Andermatt’s freeride classic: wide slopes, playful terrain, and countless lines that make powder hearts beat faster – ideal for the perfect powder day.
Wide slopes & playful terrain on the Gemsstock
The Felsental is one of the oldest and most popular freeride descents on the Gemsstock and is now firmly part of the Freeride Andermatt repertoire. Even when riding down the Sonnenpiste, you immediately notice the inviting, open terrain on the left side – a vast snowfield that becomes irresistible after fresh snowfall.
The gently pitched, spacious slopes make the Felsental especially attractive: after snowfall, you can head out early and start drawing tracks while other variants are still too tricky. The terrain is moderately steep, allows for smooth turns, and offers plenty of space for wide arcs. Still, caution is required when choosing your line, as avalanches can also be triggered here.
In the upper section, wide powder slopes dominate, while the lower part becomes more varied – with gullies, short steep steps, bumps, and small depressions that invite creative riding. This is exactly what makes the Felsental an ideal playground for freeriders looking for fun, flow, and dynamism.
Route variations & access to the Felsental
The Felsental offers several lines and variants:
-
Left & central variants: Start on the St. Annafirn, leave the piste and traverse as far left as possible. In the past, some lines led all the way down to Hospental – these are no longer permitted today due to the wildlife protection zone and must be respected.
-
Right variant (via Bärenhang): Branch off a bit further down to the left of the Sonnenpiste, hike up a short section, and enter the terrain from there. This variant can be perfectly combined with the Vorgipfel couloir.
All lines meet again further down and lead to the right of the prominent gully back to the valley station. Depending on snow conditions and line choice, it may be necessary to carry the skis briefly.
⚠️ Safety note
Even though the terrain in the Felsental appears gentler, it remains alpine freeride terrain with the associated risks. Pay attention to avalanche danger, respect protected areas, and plan your line carefully.
The Andermatt Guides will safely lead you through the Felsental and show you the best variations – adapted to snow conditions, skill level, and the day’s conditions.
