Ober Geissberg | Freeride Andermatt

The Upper Geissberg offers everything freeriders love: wide slopes, steep lines, and countless variations. A varied terrain for all levels – safely explored with Andermatt Guides.

Upper Geissberg – versatile terrain for powder lovers

The descents on the Upper Geissberg lie directly next to the glacier piste and are among the most popular classics of Freeride Andermatt. After fresh snowfall, they are often tracked quickly – but those who know the terrain or are out with an Andermatt Guide will still find untouched slopes and hidden variations.

The Upper Geissberg stands out for its versatility: gently rolling powder slopes, exciting couloirs, and rocky sections offer suitable terrain for every freeride level. Those looking for wide, open terrain will find it on the northeast-facing slopes above the Luterseeli – perfect for smooth, flowing turns and even arcs. Riders who prefer something steeper can drop into the small lake directly via point 2465, though only in safe conditions.

For advanced riders seeking the extreme, the Upper Geissberg also offers the north-northwest-facing slopes above the Luterseeli – the steepest terrain the Gemsstock has to offer. These faces usually remain untracked for good reason: a mistake here can have serious consequences.

Access & variations

Some lines can only be reached by climbing higher on the Upper Geissberg. To do so, you leave the Gurschenfirn and traverse right at around 2700 m until you reach the flat plateau behind point 2622 m. From here, numerous options open up:

  • Wide, open slopes for flowing turns

  • Steep drops and cliffs for experienced riders

  • Well-shaped couloirs requiring solid technical skill

No matter which line you choose, the Upper Geissberg offers Freeride Andermatt in all its diversity.

⚠️ Safety note

The slopes on the Upper Geissberg range from moderate to extremely steep. A solid assessment of avalanche conditions, safe off-piste behavior, and experience are essential. For a safe and enjoyable experience, it is strongly recommended to explore the area with an experienced Andermatt Guide.
