Vorgipfel Couloir – the steep heart of the Gemsstock
When talking about Freeride Andermatt, you are talking about couloirs – and the Vorgipfel Couloir is one of the most striking of them all. Narrow, steep, bold, and beautifully shaped, this line is a true classic on the Gemsstock and ranks high on the list for experienced freeriders.
The route is easily accessed from the Gemsstock mountain station. After exiting to the left toward the Sonnenpiste, you traverse a few turns before branching off to the right and following the ridge up toward point 2918 m, the Vorgipfel. From here, freeriders carry their skis a few vertical meters up to just below the summit – and then find themselves at one of the most iconic entrances in the region.
Even the first look down is impressive: the entry is only two to three meters wide, framed by sharp rock, giving the impression of a near-vertical wall. The slope drops several hundred meters below. The upper section is steep, rocky, and often only thinly covered in snow, demanding full concentration.
Further down, the terrain opens up, and the line becomes wider and more flowing. Here, the couloir rewards with perfect turns and soft powder before seamlessly merging into the open slopes of the Felsental – a dream combination for those seeking both challenge and flow.

The Vorgipfel Couloir requires alpine experience, solid avalanche assessment skills, and strong technical ability. Unfortunately, avalanche accidents have occurred here in the past – a cautious approach to both the day and the terrain is therefore essential.
