Freetouring | Freeride Andermatt

Freetouring ist Freeriden mit einem Hauch Abenteuer: ein kurzer Aufstieg, dafür unverspurte Hänge, absolute Ruhe und echtes Andermatt-Feeling – mit Andermatt Guides sicher unterwegs.

Freedom begins where the lifts end

When the first powder snow falls in Andermatt, freeriders flock to the Gemsstock. Early in the morning, everyone crowds into the cable car, all aiming to draw the first tracks in the white slopes. But just an hour later, the well-known descents – Giraffe, Felsental, Geissberg – are already tracked out.

Those still searching for untouched snow know: the powder belongs to the freetourers.

Freetouring combines the best of both worlds – the lift-assisted access of freeriding with the calm of ski touring. A short ascent is enough to reach remote valleys and untouched lines. This is exactly what makes Andermatt a true paradise for freetourers.

Classics & variations around Andermatt

One of the best-known freetouring classics is Guspis. From the Gemsstock, you first ski south, then traverse right toward the Gafallenlücke, which is reached via a short ascent – often even without skins, just carrying skis on your shoulder. From there, a huge naturally shaped terrain basin opens up, leading directly down to the Gotthard Pass road.

The classic descent follows the fall line down toward Hospental, where a ski bus or train brings you back to Andermatt. Looking into the Guspis, the striking couloirs of the Blauberg immediately stand out – impressive lines descending straight into the valley. The best-known is the Central Couloir, the most prominent line on the Blauberg.

The ascent follows the Sunnig Lücke and continues via the southern flank with easy scrambling to the highest point. The descent is alpine, steep, and requires experience, fitness, and proper mountaineering equipment – but it rewards with one of the most impressive runs in the region.

Further freetouring hotspots in Andermatt

Around Andermatt, many more opportunities for freetouring adventures open up:

  • Rothorn & Gitziälpetli – beautiful slopes and short ascents toward the Guspislücke

  • Rotstock – steep and striking gullies for ambitious riders

  • Glockentürmli – often excellent snow on the north side, with a direct descent to the Gotthard Pass road on the south side

  • Pizzo Centrale – varied terrain with wide powder slopes

For those who prefer a more relaxed experience, the descent from the Guspislücke into the Hintere Loch offers a perfect line for powder lovers who appreciate scenery and silence.

More than freetouring

The Urseren Valley is not only known for its freeride opportunities. In summer, it becomes a spectacular climbing region with spots such as the Teufelstal wall, Gross Bielenhorn, Furkahorn, and Gletschhorn – a true alpine playground for mountain sports in all its forms.

⚠️ Safety note

Many freetouring routes around Andermatt pass through alpine, steep terrain that is far less frequently skied than the popular Gemsstock descents. As a result, snowpack conditions are often less stable. A solid avalanche assessment and secure technique are essential.

For a safe and unforgettable experience, freetouring with an experienced Andermatt Guide is strongly recommended – they know the best lines, conditions, and hidden powder slopes.
